Jeet Kune Do “Way of the Intercepting Fist”, the martial art that Lee created and often showcased in his movies, is an explosive and dynamic martial art that flows through all ranges. It develops the mind, body and spirit by fusing physical movements with philosophy, as Bruce Lee intended and designed.“When you fight, fight not only with the body, and not only with your mind, but with your entire spirit.” Bruce Lee
“The difference between doing and being”
Sifu Jerry Poteet learned the art of Jeet Kune Do directly from Bruce Lee, training at the Chinatown school in Los Angeles and at Bruce’s house. While Bruce Lee was the one to forge the art of Jeet Kune Do, it was his student Jerry Poteet who lived the “Way of the Intercepting Fist”, refining JKD over the nearly 40 years between Bruce’s untimely death in July of 1973 and Jerry’s own passing in January of 2012.
While Jerry Poteet is considered Bruce Lee’s most advanced Jeet Kune Do student, it should be noted that Jerry never once claimed that any part of the Jeet Kune Do he taught came from anyone other than his friend and teacher, Bruce Lee.
Joel was given the title of “Sifu” by his teacher Jerry Poteet. There is a great responsibility that is given along with this title. Not only must one uphold the heritage of those who have come before and maintain a level of excellence in oneself, but also one must pass on to yet another generation what one has been given with compassion and integrity. Joel once asked his teacher how he could continue to grow. Jerry replied that Joel should teach each of his students to their fullest potential. Then both teacher and student would become better as martial artists and as people. Sifu Joel now teaches this dynamic martial art in Oklahoma as it was meant to be, blending the physical and the philosophical to bring you to a greater understanding of what you are doing and how to implement it into the real world with practical application. This is done with progressive steps that safely take the student to his/her highest level. It’s about reaching your highest potential. JKD by Sifu Joel “Primary Freedom” Many practitioners of Jeet Kune Do speak of getting rid of what is not useful, but few of them understand what this means. Many forms of Kung Fu adopt attributes of animals, such as tiger, snake, crane, etc. This is fine, but what Bruce wanted to get back to was the “human animal”.
You don’t see a tiger imitating a monkey to fight another tiger or to catch its next meal. Tigers are tigers and monkeys are monkeys. These animals don’t pretend to be anything else. They are fully in the moment, each moment of their lives. They don’t worry about a job or getting a new car or paying the mortgage. They reach their full potential, because they do not pretend to be anything other themselves and they do not worry about extraneous things outside of the moment. This is what Bruce was trying to get across.
